Fauzy inspires Team Malaysia in official testing

Dubai: A1 Team Malaysia, winners of the 2006 season’s last race in Shanghai, set the fastest lap time during the official team test session at the Silverstone Circuit in Great Britain late on Wednesday.

The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport kicks off its second season this week with the official team test session at Silverstone.

Team Malaysia had Fairuz Fauzy behind the wheel as he nosed ahead of inaugural season champions A1 Team France’s Nicolas Lapierre.

The A1 GP Series will pit country against country on a level playing field with teams flying their flags in races for national pride.

Most of the team which participated in the series last year are participating with new additions coming in the form of A1 Team Turkey. Organisers have sold more than 100,000 tickets for the inaugural race of the new season to be held at Zandvoort, The Netherlands.

To guarantee the fans maximum excitement, a new system is being used to determine the grid for the feature race. This will no longer be solely on the results of the Sprint race, but a combination of qualifying results, Sprint race finishes and fastest lap times.

A1GP Deputy Chairman Tony Teixeira commented: “From what has happened to date with teams testing various drivers in their shootouts, I can see that everyone is taking it as seriously, if not more seriously, than last year.”

The A1GP is looking forward to developing the series further with the possibility of increasing engine output towards the 700bhp mark from the 2008-09 season.

Discussions with engineers, suppliers and race technical staff to determine possible configurations for a new vehicle have been initiated to determine what options may be available, given A1GP’s racing parameters.
